How to Get Past the After-College Blues

By Shakeitha Graham on September 12, 2017

As college students, the biggest accomplishment for us is when we graduate and receive our degrees. We work hard and do the best we can to get to this point.

It is not an easy task, but we get through it and the stage of completion is gratifying. We celebrate our success! We say goodbye to all that we are leaving behind. It is a bittersweet moment. Some of us may feel lost after not having the routine of school to occupy our time. Our dream jobs may feel further away from our reach. All of these things can stir up some ill emotions within us. We may even get the after college blues.

However, we don’t have to let these emotions get the best of us. Here are two ways to get past the after college blues and make the best of your time after you graduate.

1. STAY FAR AWAY FROM YOUR LAZY PANTS!

Since you no longer have the routine of going to your classes and doing class assignments, it can be very easy to get lazy and become unmotivated to be productive. However, whatever you do, don’t pick up the habit of doing nothing. Try to find something constructive to do that will help you to be productive and help you to be prepared for working in your career field.

Maybe your school offers help for you to find work, whether it’s an internship or a full-time paid position at a company. Take advantage of all the help you can get. It can be extremely difficult to do it alone. There are many resources out there to help you take the next step that is right for you. There is also the option of going to graduate school. If you want to go to graduate after you graduate from college, make sure to learn everything you need to know about it and take the necessary steps you need to take to start graduate school. Get out there while you still have that ambitious fire within you!

2. Take some time off to figure things out

You can definitely do the total opposite and take some time off before you jump into the work field or go to graduate school. Plan a few weeks or even months away to relieve yourself of all the pressures of life after college. If you can afford to you can even take a year off to figure out your next step.

Become a tourist. Travel the world and visit different countries. You may find that you want to go in a completely different direction than you originally planned. This time off can give you the clarity you need to make sure you are taking the next step that is best for you. If you are a spontaneous person and the thrill of not knowing what’s next excites you, taking time off and traveling the world may be just right for you!

You don’t necessarily have to go off to another country if you choose to take time off. You can stay right where you are and figure things out. Maybe you are a creative and you’ve always been passionate about music, but pursuing a degree in music or arts wasn’t ideal for you. You can take this time to pursue your dreams of being a musician. You will be at ease knowing that you have a degree to fall back on if you need to.

Whether you want to jump right into the work field, go to graduate school, travel, or pursue your passion, you can. It’s all about what you believe is best for you. Only you can live the life you choose to live. Don’t let the after college blues keep you in a funk. Get up and do something that will benefit you and make you happy!
